Week 1

Well, we are off to a busy start to the year already and, whilst not everyone attended everyday, work has begun. Year 12 has taken-off on their flight to success!

  1. Our first activity was a warm-up and students used their creativity to create a Bird/Butterfly freize that reflects both the ADEC Journey to Discovery theme and links easily to our Trimester theme Careers and Future Choices. An active activity, it got everyone engaged, communicating and having a little fun. The only negative, a little too much Arabic was spoken but, as the girls hadn't seen each other over the summer, it was to be expected.

  2. We also looked at the completed visual as a text and discussed the metaphor and the ideas that it represents.12S and, those students with a higher level of English written skills, were then asked to write a written paragraph reflection on the activity, in their excercise books. Paragraphs were then read-out in class, students practicing their speaking and listening skills. Grammar points were hightlighted and reviewed as necessary.

  3. Secondly, CEPA Theme vocabulary was taught. Students defined and wrote definition for unknown words. For homework they wrote sentences using each word. 12S students were required to write paragraphs using as many new words as they could. These paragraphs were shared orally the following day.

  4. Next, we talked about who we are (identity), as individuals, within groups. Then, we discussed the skills that we have...the things: I can do... and, the things: I know how to do...  This was approached differently in each class, depending upon skills and abilitites. Students worked together to create Y charts (Image attached) (Simple sentence review), whilst others worked in pairs or as individuals to list their ideas. Those students who were more confident wrote paragraphs which were shared with the class on the following day. The information in the lists and charts were then used to write simple paragraphs (individual-but facilitated through peer and teacher instruction) Again, sentence (simple and compound review). Reading and sharing their paragraphs, students then edited what they had written by varying the beginnings of sentences and improving the way they linked their ideas.

  5. Where time permitted, students began an activity linked to the UAE, where they write simple questions (grammar) and, describe a familiar person, their skills abilities and vocation. ( Link to theme.) Attached document.

  6. Lastly students were introduced the texts they will need to write this term and, to this website.
