Sunday the 16th of January:
Today we reflected on what is a society and added to our understandings. Next, students discussed why and how the first societies developed and, considered their responses.
12S & A have also looked at and examined a definition that I have written. (Posted on the Week 1 Blog.)
12S is a little further ahead than 12A & B and, they have begun to think about the differences between a society and a civilization. This is proving more challenging than expected. To understand you need to consider the changes that occur and have occurred before a society can be characterised as a civilization. Students are working in groups to demonstrate their understanding using a Venn diagram/Tables in their books.
To generate understanding, students will listened to a Video Clip/lyrics by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. They will also look at visuals to help them generate a deeper understanding.
These documents and links will be posted when all students have heard/looked at them.
12B are a little behind due to class changes and interruptions.
Monday the 18th of January:
Today, 12A & S revisited the song that we listened on Sunday. The approach in each class was a little different but, basically we analysed the lyrics and linked them to what we have been learning about societies. We then made the link to civilizations by beginning to understand what it is that changes.
Next, all classes looked at a series of visuals to help them understand an important difference between societies and civilizations. Attached above.
Homework Question: How do these images link with what we are studying? What is developed in civilizations that links to these images?
In 12S we wrote together a summary of our ideas (we will go back to the venn diagrams- example below), so far, that explains the changes that occur when a society develpos into a civilization. This will be looked at in 12A/B to consolidate their understandings.
Tuesday the 19th of January:
Objectives: 12A: Complete CEPA Practice Test 3.
12S/B: Reflections/Lexical Analysis & Venn Diagrams.
Today was constructive and students completed, and are consolidating their understanding about how the first civilization developed from small societies to become dynamic and developing civilizations.
The refection acitivity based on the visual worked to create a link and help ed student understand the difference between rules and laws, as well as the effect that governance has on a society.
The completion of the venn diagram/ tables will add to their knowledge and support the comparitive analysis of changes to civilizations and across civilizations.
The slide below contains images of Sanna's work in 12S. There is also a reflection by Maitha Mohammed, in 12B, on civilizations. Other images will be added tomorrow.
Wednesday the 20th of January:
Consolidating Understandings
The focus today is on understanding the changes that occur when a society transforms and emerges as a civilization.
To support analysis and student ability to describe the similarities and difference between the populations, comparatives and superlatives will be reviewed, as well as the language of compare and contrast.
In the slides is the scaffold that was used to develop 12A's understanding of the development of societies to civilizations and, beow is the mp4 that we listened to to aid comprehension.
12S have now completed their comparative tables (Examples in the slides). 12B will complete theirs for homework. I have also included a powerpoint on civilizations to help you.
Homework:
Reflections:
a) On their understanding of the table. (Everyone.)
b) To identify the 4 pillars that support and characterize all civilizations. (This is the tool that will enable you to clearly write compare /contrast expositions. The pillars allow you to classify or, group your ideas.) (12S and Maitha)
On Location: P49 (Everyone.)
Thursday the 21st of January:
This was yet another fog day and, as such lessons were effected. However, 12 A and B completed and have developed their understandings of the similarities and differences between a society and a civilization.
12 B are now a little ahead of the other classes and we have begun (in groups to respond to the focus questions (potsed on last weeks page) for this unit. Examples of their work is in the slides below.

We can do it?
Can you?
Come and join us.
